I have always been interested in yoga, and I see the elements of Hatha yoga in Pilates and Somatics, so what I teach is a powerful blend that works the body and clears the mind. The teaching technique I have evolved encourages proper breathing and posture and in turn gives you techniques that help you centre yourself and regain your sense of proportion and basic well-being.
My approach to teaching
I am an intuitive teacher and respond to the people who are in the class so all classes are different and special in their own way. For me it’s extremely important that everyone who comes to my classes finds a level of activity which benefits them – a level which stretches them both literally and metaphorically.
I take a holistic approach, looking at each student’s physical capabilities and, what he or she wants out of their practice. My classes are small, usually no more than 12, so that I have time to spend with each student. It is not about sweating, being tough or competitive!
I have brought notable international teachers to Northern Ireland such as Godfrey Devereux, Donna Farhi, and Diane Long for special courses with my students. Students are thus exposed to different ideas and techniques that can inform their own practice.
Group Classes
I feel it is essential for individual attention as and when the need arises. This means everyone can progress without feeling held back or left behind. This is impossible where you are one of 20 or 30 or more in a class so all my classes are pre-booked and sold in blocks to run consecutively.
If you would like to come along, you will need to wear loose clothing and, if possible, bring a yoga mat.
Private Classes
Even a good teacher with a small class cannot always keep an eye on everyone at the same time. Small mis-alignments can be missed and these can be carried forward into other more complex postures. Also the class can only go as fast as the slowest student.
The benefits of a private class are:-
• you learn a personal practice suitable for yourself;
• you choose a time and pace that is suitable for you;
• you learn and understand more about the postures;
• you’re able to ask questions and
• the class is focused on you on that day.
The first class is £50, I take your medical history and the class lasts 1 ¼ hours. Thereafter a single class is £45 and a series of five 1 hour classes is £200 to be used over 8 weeks.
I recommend two private classes a month. My private classes continue all year and are usually taught in the mornings at either 10am or 11.30am.
Anyone who comes to my group classes who wants a private session is given a discount so the class costs £40 for an hour or £60 for 90 minutes.
